Music Show- My Take

There is a trend in Indian television and that trend is something that I only appreciate at a certain level. That trend is of reality shows. It is okay as long as it does not employ shameless selling of emotions for TRP. There are certain reality television shows that do employ human emotions for TRP but those shows are also scripted, so it does not bother me much. But the problem comes when such TV shows use the great art of music and sell that art for TRP.

If the shows are judged upon singing and the knowledge of music of an individual then it is perfectly fine but what happens is the contestant are selected more often on how much TRP creating content they can generate.

How many times have you seen individuals of age 35 or 40 singing in reality shows as a contestant? I guess the answer be never or may be once or twice. What does that refer to? Does that mean that if you are not young enough or old then you are not good fit for the music industry or they have generalized that individuals who does not belong to the category of twenties are not good singers or don’t have sense of music.

These are some of those things that bother me when it comes to singing reality shows. How come you always have a sob story, a proactive guy, a possible couple in the contest? The crowd that comes to watch these shows is paid and sometimes the individuals who just go to watch the shooting are treated as paid crowds and asked to follow orders.

One more flaw that I feel in these contests is the voting. If you think people can judge music and singing and all the technicalities of music better than the individuals who are masters of that field then it is utterly flawed technique to pick a winner. There are many runner-ups from various seasons who have made a big name in the industry just by their talent.

I cannot deny the fact that such reality shows haven’t given anything to the industry but these shows are becoming concentrated on the TRP and make it a seem more like a drama rather than the reality show. The stories being weaved to get more viewers and to make it seem more like a drama is something that irritates me.

I am not an expert to comment on the shows but as a viewer, as a common man I find these things irritating. We need more reality in reality shows rather than scripts. More pool of talent and people from different age groups to make these shows seem credible.

I hope in the coming years we can see some really credible reality shows for the music.
